Tools to Identify and Manage Silica Exposure – Michelle McIntyre, GFA

Join us for our August Meeting as we hold a Joint Meeting with our friends over at RIMS Southwest Florida Chapter (the Risk Management Society), who will graciously host the meeting at the Tiburon Golf Club.Session Description

Employees in both the General and Construction industries involved in respirable crystalline silica-producing tasks should receive training before being assigned work. This one-hour class will afford participants basic tools to identify and manage silica exposure. Topics will include the key provisions of the new OSHA regulations; identifying materials, products and tasks that may create silica hazards; understanding health risks and the medical surveillance program; managing exposure with an exposure control plan; implementing appropriate personal protective equipment and hygiene practices; and identifying a competent person to implement the silica control plan and inspect the job site, materials and equipment.

Ms. Michelle McIntyre holds a Master’s Degree is in Public Health and is a Board Certified Industrial Hygienist and Safety Professional.  She has around 25 years of experience in technical and regulatory aspects of environmental and public health, industrial hygiene, and health and safety. Her work includes Health and Safety Program Development and Transition Plans, Health and Safety Training, Large-scale Site Assessments, Risk and Qualitative Exposure Assessments, and Worker Exposure Assessments.  She has conducted respirable crystalline sampling and developed written plans for workers performing a variety of functions including drywall installation, tilt-wall erection, concrete pile work, fireproofing, and sandblasting. Ms. McIntyre also instructs 4-hour and 8-hour Respirable Crystalline Silica for Competent Person Construction Industry / Contractor / Subcontractor courses, and has provided extensive silica presentations for large entities including the International Concrete Repair Institute, Florida Walls and Ceilings Contractors Association, the Commercial Executive Association, and BSI EHS Services and Solutions (national webinar).

Networking will begin at 11:30, to be followed by lunch, and we will get in to the session presentation, followed by Q & A. 

FROM I-75: Turn West on Immokalee Road (EXIT 111), turn left on Airport Pulling Road, travel about 2 miles, and the entrance to Tiburón Golf Club will be on your left.  From the entrance, please follow signs for the Golf Club. Make sure you are not at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
