Founded in 1911, the non-profit American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) is the world’s oldest and largest professional safety organization. ASSP is a global organization that works to advance the technical, scientific, managerial and ethical knowledge and skills of occupational safety, health and environmental professionals, and is committed to protecting people, property and the environment. ASSP provides such services as education, public affairs, government affairs, and involvement in national and international safety standards development, technical publications and timely and ongoing communications on safety advancements worldwide.
Its members manage, supervise and consult on safety, health and environmental issues in all industries, government, insurance and education. Safety professionals work to prevent accidents, injuries and occupational diseases, create safer work and leisure environments and develop safer products. The surge of construction and population came the need for greater safety awareness and outreach for the community and a forum where safety professionals could network and better serve the needs of the community in Southwest Florida. The charter certificate was granted in June of 1991.
Recent years have seen many changes in SWFL that have effected the Florida Suncoast Chapter activities. Our Chapter meets monthly and hosts speakers from various industries to meet the needs of our community. The founders of the chapter came from the construction and general industry. Our group has grown to more than 85 members and we continue to promote the attendance of membership as well as guests at our monthly meetings.
